Interesting that when instructed to be creative and given productivity goals creative results were higher. It seems simply being told to be creative results in more creative behavior - I wonder how this related though to what the participants views are about their own creative abilities - if a student does not think they are creative adding the pressure of "be creative" might actually hurt creative output. How could you test for this? Label tasks - use your 3rd idea- or have no goals just an outcome - create a something .... You'd have to also control for how they feel about the outcome (painting if they can't paint)

The three primary theories of creativity are:
(1) Primary Process Cognition, - creative people can switch easily from primary (dreaming) to secondary cognition (reality based)
(2) Defocused Attention - the number of elements a person can keep in mind at the same time, and
(3) Associative Hierarchies - the ability to bring unrelated remote ideas into contiguity

Intrinsic motivation
Confluence: the interplay of all the elements plus the individual levels of each
Expertise, Imaginative thinking skills, Venturesome personality, Intrinsic motivation, Creative environment.

Intrinsic motivation (doing something that one finds interesting or personally meaningful) leads to higher levels of creativity than extrinsic motivation (doing something in order to earn a reward or in anticipation of having one’s work evaluated—to get a good grade). - See more at: http://www.creativitypost.com/psychology/most_of_what_you_know_about_divergent_thinking_is_wrong#sthash.f8Odabmx.dpuf

Teach creative skills explicitly.  According to Collard, “Creative skills aren’t just about good ideas, they are about having the skills to make good ideas happen.”  He suggests creative skills should include 5 major areas:
·       Imagination
·       Being disciplined or self-motivated.
·       Resiliency
·       Collaboration
·       Giving responsibility to students.  Have them develop their own projects.
